Hi, I’m Neil and I’m CEO at SOLUS . It’s been great watching SOLUS grow, having our Library App used by patrons across the world. With our first customer in Africa recently joining customers in Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Australia. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, cycling and skiing.

CTO here at Solus. I have a passion for building products that make people’s lives easier – and especially love it when we get the reaction “I didn’t think that was even possible” from customers and end users. I love to travel and am very thankful to have had lots of opportunities to meet library staff around the world.

I remember my local library in Eaglesham, just south of Glasgow. It was small but it packed a punch and was a really important resource in our village community. My parents still live close by and it’s pretty cool that my Mum uses the Library App to reserve books for her book group & then collects them from her local Library.

The Hamilton Town House library was my library as a child – my dad used to take me along. He’d go straight into the main library on the ground level and I’d race down the old staircase to the children’s library. I repeatedly checked out the same book over and over again – Bridging the Golden Gate by Kathy Pelta.

I’m Brenton and I’m responsible for our business in the APAC region. I have a passion for innovative technology so I love working in partnership with libraries for the benefit of the community. It’s great to be able to bring all the fantastic content and services they offer to the fingertips of library users.

Known to many as JR, I’m the Director of SOLUS in North America. Based in Upstate New York, I’m focused on Business Development and Partnerships. I’ve been in the Library Industry for most of my working life and some would call me an industry veteran but I’m not ready for the bench anytime soon.

At 5 years old when my Dad took me to the main Edmonton Public Library. After parking, we walked through the dark parking garage to a set of stairs that led us into the main Library. LIGHT! COLORS! PEOPLE! KIDS AND BOOKS! Lots and lots of books and happy people milling about. And there was an entire section of the library, just for kids! My first book was easy to remember, Curious George, I loved that monkey!

With my mother being a librarian I’ve always had a strong connection to libraries from an early age. I have great memories growing up spending quality time in my local library in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. These days I love taking my young daughter down to our local library in Docklands “The Dock”.

Since a young age, I have had a love of books and loved going to both my local and school libraries in Mildura, Victoria where we grew up. I remember spending my time browsing the shelves looking at all the different books and trying to narrow down which 10 books I would borrow that week!

When I was little I remember being so excited for the Summer Reading Challenge each year and borrowing my favourite Jacqueline Wilson book over and over again. Now I enjoy taking my own kids to the library and they even have a soft play and activity area. It's not the quiet place I remember anymore!

Library Outreach

As a kid, my mum used to take me to our local library, Gourock Library, Scotland which I remember being a very large, old building that was always warm inside. They would always have events running for youngsters whenever I was there. I enjoyed going to the library, mainly because it had a better internet connection than my house, but I liked the books too.

Towards the end of primary school, I would go to the library every month or so to check out a new book and sometimes have things printed, and I think that the school taking us so often encouraged me to keep going after they had stopped.

The “My Childhood Library Experience” is difficult for me as we didn’t have a library where I grew up. However, my Dad took me to the National Library of Aleppo several times as a kid in the 1980s and I do enjoy reading and quotations. My favourite is; "Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you only have today!".

With no Internet or Google available as a child, you could say the Library was our version of the Internet! My local Library, Teynham Library, was used regularly as a child whether it was our weekly school trip walking 2 by 2 to the library to choose a new reading book for the week ahead.
